Yes! Jesus Loves Me!

ephesians-6-16-shield-of-faith

Do you ever wonder what the why is when things turn out differently than you had planned, scheduled, or anticipated? When a curve ball deters your direction and makes your life just go into pause mode?

There are times in my life when I don’t understand  the why. I don’t like things on my schedule being put on hold. I don’t like having to wait for appointments. But that is what I am having to do right now.

Recently our granddaughter Harper, told me she remembers me singing to her “Jesus Loves Me” song when she was a baby. I was shocked she brought that up and remembered it! I would sing to her that song and others to make her stop crying, when we would be babysitting and needing to put the grandkids to bed before mommy and daddy got home. It worked. Harper would stop crying and relax in my arms and fall asleep when I sang to her that particular song.

“Jesus Loves Me” was written by Anna Bartlett Warner and published in 1860. The scripture verses this song points to is from Ephesians 3:17-19: “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith – that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” This was Paul’s prayer for the believers in Ephesus. Trials in life test the reality and depth of our experience.

“The storm that blows reveals the strength of the roots.” Warren Wiersbe

Then Paul concluded his doxology with verse 20: “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”

Yes, there are many things I don’t know or understand right now, but this is what I do know regarding Jesus’ love for me:

Psalm 23:2-3: “He makes me to lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

Psalm 25:14 NIV: “The LORD confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.”

Psalm 28:7: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.”

Romans 8:34b: “Christ Jesus is the one who died – more than that, who was raised – who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”

1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”

Zephaniah 3:17: “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you with his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

Romans 5:2b-5: “. . . We rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Are you going through a time of being forced to grow in not giving up, and living out in real life what you believe? Character building always is a stretching and growing experience. We are not always given a choice about the process, but the end result is what God has in mind. It is always about His glory that will be revealed at His appointed time. He is in charge of the “how.”

Adversity has a way of challenging us. Being in physical pain can be a purifying process. It has taught me new things I did not know before. Once again I have had to rely on God’s strength and will for my life one day at a time. He knows what is best for me. God knows the “how.”

Listen to Rye Stevenson’s song, “In the Eye of the Storm”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB0ReTpA6Gg

This song has been running through my mind for a solid week. The words speak of the power of God. It points me back to praising God for all He has abundantly done in my life. It reminds me that He guards me, His loves encompasses me, He is my anchor, and in times of adversity He is there right beside me. Yes! Jesus loves me!

“Life has famines and funerals. Nobody registers for the school of suffering. Don’t mistake the silence of God for the absence of God.” Pastor Todd Smith

The words of the song, “Jesus Loves Me” is still factual truth for all of us at any age or stage in life. I may be physically weak, but He is strong. Yes! Jesus loves me!

Are you experiencing adversity in the form of physical pain right now? Please share in a comment below so I can pray for you and be of encouragement through this time. Perhaps you would be willing to share how people have come along beside you and helped you in special ways that ministered to your life while you were experiencing physical, health challenges. I would love to hear your story.

Our aim still needs to be about bringing glory to God in the midst of our suffering. That is our purpose in life. Satan wants to squelch that. He will not win when our shield of faith is raised. It will extinguish the enemy’s arrows (Ephesians 6:16) when we raise our armor of God. Prayer activates our armor.

In the hands of God, nothing is ever wasted.

If you have not read, Adam Holland’s book, “Anchored In The Storm,” I would highly recommend you buy it on Amazon. Adam has gone through physical suffering from having a brain tumor. He had cancer. He writes of his experience, but every page is written as a devotional for those who are suffering. Adam’s desire is for anyone in this situation, to be pointed to Christ, and the “incredible destiny He has for you.”

Yes! Jesus loves me!

Stop – Be Still – Then Patiently Listen

plugged-into-prayer

God audibly spoke to young Samuel three times, but Samuel did not realize it was the LORD calling out to him. 1 Samuel 3:7 tells us: “Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.” Then Eli wisely instructed Samuel to reply the next time the LORD was calling to him and say: Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.”

1 Samuel 3:10: “And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” Samuel was now ready and had his ears tuned to listen to God’s message to him.

Think about these three questions:

  • How can I train my heart and mind to listen for God’s message to me in my life?
  • Am I diligently and with anticipation waiting for God to speak to me each time I read His Word?
  • In what ways does an awareness of God’s presence change the way I live each day?

It tells us in 1 John 2:20: “But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.” This “anointing” refers to the Holy Spirit. He is our comforter. He is our counselor. God gives us the Spirit of truth at the time of our salvation. At this point, the Holy Spirit immediately begins to illuminate our minds and is renewing us from the inside out.

But am I waiting and watching and listening for His Spirit to speak to me through the verses of Scripture I read this morning? What about my prayer time? Am I waiting to hear what God wants to say to me instead of monopolizing the conversation with all of my requests?

Much in our lives results instantly or quickly. It started with the Polaroid camera. Getting to see a printed picture of what we had just snapped within minutes miraculously would appear. We have microwaves for reheating and preparing our food within seconds. If our computer is not booting up quickly, we complain and want it replaced with a newer and speedier one. We use WAZE for finding the quickest route to our destinations. The Keurig Coffee maker enables making one cup of tea, or coffee, or hot cocoa, within minutes. Sending a text message or email has replaced writing a letter and putting it in the mail. So many things happen instantly in our generation. Patience is not our virtue.

But Psalm 37:7a states: “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him . . .” There is that word patiently.

Psalm 46:10 declares: “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted above the nations, I will be exalted above the earth!”

It requires patience for us to purposefully be quiet before the Lord. To only pause and sit at His feet. To wait for Him to speak to us through His Word and our prayers.

“The more you immerse yourself in the Word, the more closely your thoughts, emotions, and decisions will align with what the Spirit is saying to you and the more your flesh will lose its power and strength.” Priscilla Shirer.

Ephesians 6:18-19a declares: “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance making supplication for all the saints, and also for me . . .”

Am I watching and looking for God’s handprint in every person I encounter since I have asked God to bless and lead and guide me throughout this day? I ask Him to help me be that shining light for the people I am with, but does my faith in God show that? I so often fall short.

In this busy season of the upcoming holidays, may we stop, be still, and wait for God’s Spirit to speak to us, the anointed ones, in blessing our minds and hearts from His precious promises to us that we read and deposit into our mind and then develop deep into our heart.

For just a few minutes block out emails, block out messages, block out social media, and simply “be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.”

My prayer for today: God I am patiently waiting for you to speak to me from the verses that I have just read in Your Word. Give me blessings, insight, and full knowledge of the many precious promises you have just waiting for me to read and reflect on. Thank you that your forgiveness is unconditional and you never bring up my past sins that You have mercifully and graciously forgiven! You are the great I AM! I praise you for being my overseer, my shepherd, my comforter, and how abundantly you have restored my life! Thank you, in Jesus name, Amen!

Let us train our hearts and minds to look for God working all things together for our good, as He has promised in Romans 8:28.

Let us have a new awareness of God’s presence with us all the day long.

Hebrews 12:1b-2: “. . . let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.”

Stop. Be still. Then patiently listen for God’s message.

When the Answer Is Not Clear

i-dont-know-sign-making-decisionsAre you unsure about an individual decision that needs clarity? Here are ten verses to remember while going through any significant decision process:

Psalm 119: 169: “Let my cry come before you O LORD; give me understanding according to your word!”

Jeremiah 33:3: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.”

Psalm 32:8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”

Psalm 24:14 NIV: “The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.”

Psalm 37:40: “The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.”

Luke 1:37: “For nothing will be impossible with God.”

Isaiah 40:2-3a: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God. . .”

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 2:6: “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Needing to make the right decision is not always black and white. There could be consequences for either choice.

The prophet Isaiah stated in Isaiah 30:21: “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when your turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” Just like a shepherd directs his sheep to head in the right direction, so God will lead all of our ways as we seek and ask how. He will give you the “how” through wise counsel, reading His Word, and prayer.

Do you need that clear direction from God right now? Sit at His feet. Solicit His almighty wisdom. Pray out loud verses regarding asking for wisdom from the Lord and make them your prayer. Wait for any verse that the Holy Spirit speaks to you in clarity of thought and discernment that you are needing. Then take the action that God is revealing to you since you have asked him for it. Do it.

Jesus is our good shepherd. He guides us. He directs our steps. John 10:27-29 HCSB, declares: “My sheep hear My voice, I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish – ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. My father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

God has promised to direct, lead, and steer us as is stated in John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

I have a folding chair in my office that I keep a sign on it that says: “Reserved. God’s chair.” It helps me be more personal in my conversations with God as I picture God sitting right there listening to me as I pour out my heart to Him.

“The Spirit inspired the Word and therefore He goes where the Word goes. The more of God’s Word you know and love, the more of God’s spirit you will experience.” John Piper.

Diligently study God’s Word.

Have a humble heart (Psalm 25:9 above verse).

Seek counsel from mature, wisdom filled Christians.

Ask God to illumine your heart and mind with His wisdom. Listen.

Then go and do it!

Contentment vs. Comparison

cup-of-tea-and-biscuitI made myself a cup of English Tea this morning. The smell of that particular tea brought a sudden rush of a pleasant memory from my childhood. I remembered being at Grandpa and Grandma Helmers house on Sunday afternoons with a gathering of my uncles, aunts, and cousins. Grandma would always prepare and serve tea and various cookies, or Ritz crackers with butter on them. We children would sometimes get to have “milk tea,” as we sat together, just us kids, at Grandma and Grandpa’s kitchen table. What made it special, besides getting to drink what the adults were drinking, is that we got to drink it out of a delicate china teacup too! Milk was always added to our tea as kids. How I remember the smell of that tea. The aroma of my English Tea brought me back to a simpler time as a child. It was a contented time. That memory brought a smile of a peaceful time from my upbringing in Northwest Iowa.

learning-to-be-content

Can I say what Paul said in Philippians 4:11 – I, Linda Killian, have learned in whatever situation I am to be content? Have I learned the secret of living through every circumstance  in a state of abiding peace? Those two words “learned” and “content” are important words.

Paul wasn’t able to be content automatically after he became a Christian. Paul went through the school of hard knocks and trials. He learned the secret of how to be content by totally depending on Christ’s resources over his own self-sufficiency. He stayed the course. He fought the good fight.

The definition of contentment from a biblical perspective is: “An internal satisfaction which does not demand changes in external circumstances”—Holman Bible Dictionary.

I have to confess, I do not always have that mindset. How about you?

Do circumstances change your thermostat temperature reading? Or do you enforce your ability to remain steadfast in the truth that you already know, so you don’t shoot up and down emotionally as situations change? Are you a victim of your circumstances or a victor? I will admit I am too often a victim, due to my attitude regarding problems that arose throughout my day.

As a member of the perfectionists club, and being on the type A side, when things don’t go as expected and planned that is a problem for me. I have my schedule. I have my list of stuff to do and have researched, studied, and thought out how they should get accomplished each day.

1 Timothy 6:6-8;10: states: “Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content . . . For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. . .”

So that means in smooth times, in rough times, we are to be content in where God has placed us and given to us for today. We cannot see into the future. I can only reflect on where I am at today and be thankful because God is in control.

I have said that my signature verse after enduring a particular trial in the past became Psalm 119:92: “If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.” Then my prayer became: Teach me Your Word during this season of my life like I have never known it before, and make this verse my testimony when I emerge from this place.

death-of-contentment

When our eyes look with envy towards what some other woman is wearing or her status in life, we have lack of contentment and appreciation.

When we fall into the trap of comparisons, it leads us to insecurity, feeling worthless, and a lack of gratitude for what God has given to us.

I was told men tend to suffer in silence and become overwhelmed when considering they are not good enough, while we women seem to fall into insecurity issues.

Here are a few verses to help us all in this area of having more contentment. Push the pause button. Drink a cup of tea. Reboot your mind with these truths from God’s Word:

Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Ephesians 3:20: “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”

1 Peter 5:6: “Humble yourselves therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.”

Psalm 23:1: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Hebrews 13:5: “Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content, with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

John 4:14: “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become to him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

What is weighing on your heart today? Is it your children? Are you experiencing relationship issues? Are you carrying a heavy burden and wish it would end? Or are you somewhere in-between?

May we all stop this trap of comparison in our lives. There is a right time to be stubborn. We must be stubborn in not giving into saying yes to frustrations.

My prayer for today: God forgive me for not being more thankful for what you have given to me for today. This is a new day that you have created and planned just for me. You have gone ahead of me already. You are my shield and overseer. Thank you for Your plan of working out all things for my good for Your glory. I ask that You answer my dreams that I have committed over to You in your designated time frame.

“Real contentment must come from within. You and I cannot change or control the world around us, but we can change and control the world within us.” Warren Wiersbe.

“Life is not a series of accidents. It is a series of appointments. This is the providence of God, a wonderful source of contentment.” Warren Wiersbe.

Their Grass Is Not Always Greener

whenever-you-feel-unloved-or-insecure-ephesians-2-verses-19-and-22

Insecurity and lack of self-esteem often attack us women more often than men. We too often compare ourselves with one another. Then envy, jealousy, discontentment, and feelings of guilt, shame, frustration and failure overwhelm us. We become an open target by allowing this bondage to play havoc in our mind. These thoughts do not come from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and must be replaced with truth.

It doesn’t matter what our age is; it seems to be a universal problem we women have to all fight against no matter what age we are. We never seem to outgrow this problem.

Comparing ourselves to others and always needing approval is unhealthy. I have been in this battle recently and have had to work through it once again, and I am how old? I had three different instances that overwhelmed me with feeling terribly insecure and that I was just not good enough. I did not see it coming ahead of time. But it walloped me a few weeks ago, and I once again had to fill my mind with God’s truth and dig into His word for reassurances to come out a winner in the enemy’s battle for my feelings of self-worth and self esteem.

Truth: The path and order of Romans 8:28, “working everything out for my good” runs through a different route for me than anyone else’s. But I often look at others and envy something about their life’s situation over mine in comparison. That is a sticky trap used by the enemy to make us forget that our identity is in Christ and Christ alone. He wants to distract us from keeping steadfast and firm in the assurance of God’s all-encompassing love and acceptance of us.

Facebook has created a whole new arena Satan uses for attacking us women in this area of needing approval and needing to feel worthy, lovable, capable, desirable, forgivable, and significant. When women post a picture of a gathering of close friends, do you wonder why you were not invited? I have. Was I just overlooked? I rarely post a picture of going to lunch with a friend for that very reason on Facebook. I don’t ever want to hurt someone that may feel left out and wonder why they were not included.

1 John 3:1-2 tells us: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are . . . Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

My grandfather, on my mother’s side, had three different men in his family that committed suicide. Grandpa Helmers had a brother, named Hyho, that hung himself in his barn and died. I have been told it was over a decision he greatly regretted. Then Hyho’s son Irvin, so mourned over his father’s sudden death, he shot himself. Insecurity, and feelings of failure and worthlessness, so poisoned these men’s minds.

In the 1990’s a third relative, who was only in his late twenty’s or thirty’s, took his  life due to an overwhelming financial crisis. He just didn’t know how to fix it so he killed himself. He left his wife and young children to carry on life without him. His life insurance policy did not pay out benefits because suicide was the cause of death.

Each of these men ended their lives abruptly due to life seeming to be just too hard. They had to be comparing themselves with other men to have such strong feelings of inadequacies and hopelessness. I wonder what or who could have prevented them from such a tragic outcome? Their personal sense of worthlessness cut their life short.

Sometimes we women just need for another woman to listen to what is on our heart, hug us, smile, and give us reassurance that yes, we are a lovely person from the inside out. We need a buddy strap telling us we are ok and likable. Again, those “apples of gold” words God uses to turn our minds around and shake off feelings of failure are priceless. Sometimes we just need to express our feelings to another female and get it all out. But that isn’t enough or the lasting solution. We need to renew our minds with Psalm 139 and many other great verses that express our inheritance of salvation in Christ. That is our true identity.

Ask God to help you to be of benefit to someone today. Look for another woman in need of encouraging words she needs to hear just from you, so you can add a blessing to her day. Focus on outward ways of showing brotherly affection and love by writing a kind note, text, email, or by some gesture of service to a friend in some way. A bouquet of flowers brings a smile, adds cheer to a room, and shows appreciation.

Here are a few verses to remember and have handy to combat insecurity:

Ephesians 6:16—17: “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one, and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Wrong thinking: I don’t know what to do? Right thinking: Psalm 119:24 “Your testimonies are my delight, they are my counselors.”

Wrong thinking: I just want to give up. I am a total failure. Right thinking: 1 Corinthians 16:13 “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”

Wrong thinking: I can’t do things like _____ can. I am afraid I didn’t do it good enough. Right thinking: Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Wrong thinking: I have no self-confidence that I can do anything right. I blew it again! Right thinking: Hebrews 10:35-36 “Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what is promised.”

Wrong thinking: Bad things always seem to happen to me. Right thinking: Psalm 27: 13 “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!”

Reboot your mind with the truths of God’s word. Be transformed from wrong thinking to right thinking by renewing your mind with the fact that you are justified and redeemed in Christ as it declares in Romans 3:24: “And are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

John 15:15b-16a “. . . but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit . . .” Jesus calls me His friend!

Identify this problem of comparison and insecurity as a stronghold from the enemy.

Confess to God of going backward in your walk with Him. Tell Him you don’t want to cooperate with that anymore. Praise God for everything He has given you and done for you already because thanksgiving activates peace and corrects our wrong thought patterns in our brain.

Apply God’s truth with an ongoing action. Pray Hebrews 11:6b: “. . . he rewards those who seek him.” Ask God to reward you in some way.

Colossians 2:10: “And (put your name in the blank)______________ has been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”

Romans 8:31: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for (put your name in this blank) _____________, who can be against (put your name again in this blank)_________.”

John 15:7: “If (put your name in the blank)___________, abide in me, and my words abide in (put your name in the blank) __________, ask whatever (put your name in the blank) __________, you wish, and it will be done for you.”

Philippians 4:19: “And my God will supply every need of yours (fill in your name) __________, according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

It says in Psalm 119:3b (NASB): “. . . And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold O LORD, You know it all.”

The enemy will try to deceive us into believing we are not likable enough, not cute enough, not smart enough, not experienced enough, not worthy of much, or not truly forgiven. These are all lies. Instead of complaining and comparing ourselves against one another, praise God for the talents and gifts He has given you and ask Him to further reveal to you what they are. Ask God to exalt you at His appointed time.

Prayer is our weapon in action. Our sword is the Bible.

Reboot your mind with Colossians 3:2-3: “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” This verse is the theme of my women’s devotional book, “Developing a Heavenly Mind Control. Devotional Thoughts to Reboot Our Minds with Truth.”

My prayer: God forgive me for not being more thankful for what You have given and done for me. Thank You for loving me. Thank You for your abundant patience with me and forgiveness. Use whatever talents and gifts You have given me for Your glory and benefit. Use me to be a blessing to someone in need today. I deeply desire what Ephesians 3:19 says: “And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you ( I- Linda) may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Amen.

So the three instances that lampooned my feelings of self-worth and caused me to feel total rejection a few weeks ago? Not any of them matter now.

Next time, when you compare yourself to some other woman that appears to have it all together and you don’t: Remember, their grass is not always greener.

Pizza, Red Velvet Cake, Chips, and Salsa

“Our minds are mental greenhouses where unlawful thoughts, once planted, are nurtured and watered before being transplanted into the real world of unlawful actions… These actions are savored in the mind long before they are enjoyed in reality. The thought of life, then, is our first line of defense in the battle of self-control.” Jerry Bridges.

There are 52 verses in the Bible about self-control.

Pizza, red velvet cake, chips, and salsa, – these delicious foods often challenge my willpower. My husband lacks self-restraint when he has a little pie with his ice cream. There is nothing wrong with food or having fun. But if they become hindrances in our life, then that is a problem.

Ever put too much salt on your food? That is a vivid example of something out of balance. Too much salt is not tasty. It overpowers the other flavors and is not pleasing to eat.

I think of our grandson Tate. He never eats after he is full. He stops. He just isn’t tempted to keep on eating. I admire that about him.

I often wish I would have kept my thoughts to myself after speaking abruptly, and not using more self discipline in this area. Do you?

I will never have a “poker face.” That is why I will never play poker. The expression on my face will give it all away every time! I can’t help it.

self-control-beth-moore

We need to have balance and moderation in our life in every area.

Here are several verses to remember regarding self-control and self-discipline:

I Corinthians 9:25a; 27: “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath . . . But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

Psalm 141:3: “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!”

Proverbs 21:23: “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.”

Proverbs 29:11: “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.”

Luke 14:11: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

1 Peter 5:8: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

2 Peter 1:6-7: “And knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.”

Titus 1:7-8: “For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach, He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.”

Titus 2:11-12: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Yes, pizza, chips and salsa, red velvet cake, pie and ice cream are all enjoyable when not eaten in excess.

Words fitly spoken are like “honey and apples of gold (see the post on “Gracious Words Fitly Spoken”). How I often regret, after the fact, when bluntness has come out of my mouth before I am able to filter it with God’s love and grace and mercy.

“He who angers you conquers you.” Elizabeth Kenney.

“Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To these, I commit my day.” Max Lucado.

“We must have a spirit of power towards the enemy, a spirit of love towards men, and a spirit of self-control towards ourselves.” Watchmen Nee.

My prayer for today: God, thank you for your peace and joy that fills my heart. I want to have Your Word control my thoughts, actions, relationships,  problems, what I put into my mouth, and what comes out of my mouth in conversations. May I also use self-control in how I spend money. This world is not my home. Thank you for the abundance of excellent flavors to share with family and friends!

Ah yes, pizza, red velvet cake, chips, and salsa, and a little pie with some ice cream! Yum!

But the inner soul needs and can only find peace in Jesus Christ as it says in Psalm 107: 9: “For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”

Review verses on having self-control. Isn’t it always easier to see what others are lacking and falling short in, instead of your own?  Administer the quality of self-control as Peter declares in 2 Peter 1:10b: “. . . if you practice these qualities you will never fall.”

Radiant

radiant-psalm-35-verse-5

The definition of the word “radiant” means: Sending out the light or shining and glowing brightly. Having intense joy. Luminous, glowing, dazzling, and bright, are all synonyms for the word radiant. I think the modern day word “bling” could also apply.

Is your face radiantly reflecting Christ? Has time in the word made an impact on your thoughts? If not, ask the LORD to speak to you vividly through a verse that will zing (that is what I call it, “zing”). Yes, your troubles are still there, but take it as your occupation to let God’s light shine on your face as you reflect Jesus, to others you come in contact with each day. You have spent time with God Almighty who protects, shepherds, always listens, shields, rewards, blesses, and answers your prayers. You are equipped to handle whatever may come with your arsenal of verses. It is time to let your light shine!

Priscilla Shirer has said in her Bible study book, “The Armor of God,” that we are “a publisher of peace, a messenger of the good news. Through God’s Word, you can pronounce freedom and peace over your own circumstances and even the lives of those you love.” That is a new concept to me. I am a publisher of peace from having my “. . . feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.” Ephesians 6:15, HCSB.

I can think of two women that have been examples to me of being peace-filled Christian women. The one has had a serious life change of events in her life. But God’s Word is her steadying force. How she loves to dig and help other women know how to study the Bible in spite of her situation. My other friend, who lives in Colorado, uses humor to turn any pessimistic attitude into a positive attitude. When I think of this woman, her smile, sarcasm, and laughter automatically come to mind. Her glass is always half full and never half empty. Her strong faith in God exudes the peace in her heart.

Luke 8:16, ESV, declares: “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.”

My question for myself is: Will my face radiate from my time with God this morning and will my light so shine before others even when we are in conflict? That challenges me.

I must confess my face was not radiating the joy of the Lord, in CVS recently. I was not able to take a package of the Oral-B replacement toothbrush heads off the hook, so I went to the front register and told the employee my problem. He spoke over the intercom for a service employee to go to Isle 25 and meet a customer. I went back there and after waiting for five to ten minutes walked all the way back to the front of the store, and complained to the young man behind the register that no one came. He apologized and repeated the command again for a service employee to meet a customer in Isle 25. I waited longer. No one came. I tried every conceivable way to tear that package off the hook, but it would not come down. I wished I had a scissors. I would have cut it off the hook. At last a friendly smiling woman came and retrieved my toothbrush package off of the locked rack. I did not have a patient expression when I again went back to the register where the clerk was who rang up my purchase. My patience was tested, and I didn’t pass the test as I walked out of the store shaking my head.

David proclaimed in Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Am I continually giving thanks to the LORD throughout the day? No, I have to admit I too quickly complain about situations, get impatient, and instead of radiating God’s goodness and mercy, I grumble.

The HCSB puts Psalm 34:5 this way: “Those who look to Him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.” That is the key. As we look to the Lord for guidance, for answers, for His will, His companionship, we should then be radiant with joy, and then our words will not come back to embarrass us after the fact.

Psalm 34:5: “Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces will not be ashamed.”

God is our rock, our strength, our encourager, our deliverer. His mercies are new every morning.

“We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.” Chuck Swindoll.

Dear LORD, as I look to you for help, I want to reflect the radiant, happy joy that only You can give. May Your peace be evident in my conversations. You take away my shame, my guilt, my frustrations and failures due to Your unconditional  and never ending love. I want my face to reflect radiance from my relationship with You. I want to apply your peace in my life better, so my face is glowing and not ashamed from stupid stuff getting the best of me.

“This too will pass.” Nella Helmers.

Let the peace of God radiate on your face today.

Overwhelmed

overwhelmed-but-fights-again-picture

Psalm 16:8: “I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.”

Psalm 18:2: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Have you been feeling overwhelmed with what you have to juggle throughout your day? Is there some situation that has  you in exhaustive turmoil? Do you feel like you need a personal anti-fatigue cushion mat?

I have been there recently. I have had a work related problem that has taken up my time and efforts for a whole week. I do not know when or how our perception of the correct answer will be accepted by the other party. Or if it will be accepted at all. So I wait. The turbulence has caught me by surprise. It has caused me difficulty in moving forward. My sense of wellbeing and stability has been interrupted. I hate to admit that my self confidence has been attacked. However, I must refocus my mind on God’s word, rather than my problem.

Memorizing scripture and getting it deeply rooted and planted in my soul, will give me the added endurance and physical strength and intellectual sharpness for this current battle. My thoughts will then be redirected on what Paul exhorted the believers in Philippi to do in Philippians 4:8:“. . . whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things,” instead of focusing on an exasperating problem. That is what I am having to do today right now. Have you had the same experience this week? Do I have any “Me too!” out there?

When I am memorizing God’s Word, I am sharpening my mental brain cells with truth and focusing on Him, rather than me. Starting out my day with keeping the perimeter secured (see previous post “Securing the Perimeter”) from my God and I time, will strengthen me for the battles of life. A wise friend recently challenged me last week to start memorizing scripture and expounded on all of the benefits that memorizing does for the brain. I did some research and he is absolutely right. There are significant mental benefits in hiding God’s word in your heart, by memorizing God’s truth. His light will shine forth in our heart and mind by our brain spitting back to us specific verses in the Bible when we need them the most, if we have memorized scripture. That is our needed ammunition along with prayer, and then a time of praising and giving thanks to God for all He has already done, will bring our minds back in proper focus and concentration.

10 Proven Benefits For the Brain From Practicing Memorization:

  • Trains the brain to remember.
  • Challenges the brain.
  • Recall of information takes place in the brain quicker.
  • Helps the brain respond quicker and be more agile.
  • Has been known to save brain power.
  • Learn to have focus naturally.
  • Essential in learning new concepts.
  • Improves short term memory.
  • Frees up the mind to have better creativity.
  • Higher cognitive skills and sharper minds for years to come.

Another benefit from memorizing scripture is peace will replace mental chaos. Try committing this verse to memory: Romans 12:1-2: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Paul was declaring to the believers in Rome, that they should be continually changed by the renewing of their minds from reading God’s Word. We should be doing this frequently and on an ongoing schedule of routine. Our conscience will then be sharpened and in tune with God’s ways constantly. We will be better able to discern His will for our lives by being saturated in committing God’s truths in our hearts. This change will then be made radical from the inside out. I want God to radically change and renew and transform my thinking by His Holy Spirit, as it states in Deuteronomy 11:18: “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”

Another verse that I recommend memorizing is Psalm 19:7, I call it my CPR verse: “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” Yes! God refresh, and restore my soul and make me smarter in life! Help me not to do and say stupid stuff! I love that word reviving!

God’s love for us never diminishes. Memorize Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” That verse reminds me of the old hymn: “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Then the song went on to say: “Morning by morning new mercies I see. Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not. As thou hast been thou forever will be. Great is thy faithfulness.”

Since God is upholding the universe, He is upholding you and I and supporting, defending, confirming, and sustaining us every day and moment by moment. His love for us never stops. His compassion, His grace, His forgiveness, His generosity and kindness, never comes to an end. Each morning starts with a fresh slate with God. Great is God’s continuing commitment and promises to us as Romans 8:28 declares: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” I needed to be reminded of that very verse right now.

Need to push the pause button of your life for a few minutes? Inhale deeply. Exhale deeply. Then pick up your Bible, which is “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17) and make a deliberate effort at memorizing some verse, a whole section, or an entire chapter of Scripture. It will cause the brain to be sharper. It will increase your intelligence. Focusing back on God’s power and security will naturally take place. It will help you stay young. It will have significant mental health benefits.

I challenge you to commit to a plan of memorizing scripture. Hide God’s promises in your heart. Let them steep in your soul so they travel from your heart up to your brain. Then when you are tempted to become discouraged, overwhelmed, and have anxious thoughts, specific verses you have memorized will pop up and you will be able to stand firm and combat Satan tempting you with his weapons of guilt, shame, frustration, or failure. I have struggled with feelings of failure, guilt, and frustration this week. Then I felt ashamed for not rising above this crazy problem at work and allowing it to disrupt my week.

I recently discovered a free app called “Scripture Typer.” It has three simple techniques to help one memorize scripture. Type it. Memorize it. Master it. It is now my tool that I am putting into practice in sharpening my brain power by memorizing God’s Word. It even reminds you when you need to review a verse you have memorized and mastered!

My prayer today: God, I thank and praise You for your faithfulness in listening to my needs that I continue to give to You. Yes, even my disappointments that I share with You, alone. You never tell me: “You’ve already said that!” Thank You! I need to trust You moment by moment, and I ask that You help me in the details where I am feeling overwhelmed and replace those emotions with the facts from your precious promises that I have committed to memory. I had forgotten that my battle is not mine but Yours’ dear God. You fight for me as it says in Deuteronomy 3:22 and 2 Chronicles 20:15b (“. . . for the battle is not yours but God’s.”). Give me your wisdom and transform me by renewing my mind radically from Your Word. I realize what problems I face today will not necessarily matter two weeks from now. Give me strength for today and may I replace throwing my hands up in the air with my hands together, and fingers pointing up to You. Now, I am ready for another day as I recite verses that are my sword of the Spirit!

If you have felt overwhelmed this week, please know that I am praying for you and so relate. What verses are you then going to start to memorize? Now it is your turn to talk. Leave a comment about a verse you plan to commit to memory. I would love to hear what they are!

Gracious Words Fitly Spoken

words-have-power

Proverbs 16:24 “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Proverbs 25:11 “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”

A few weeks ago my husband and I stopped at a local honey store and bought a container of clover honey and a jar of sage honey. Bennett’s Honey Farm is our favorite place to buy and sample good quality honey. I picked up a book on one of the display racks and started to read about all of the amazing healthful advantages from honey. Here are a few of the reported health benefits:

  • B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and amino acids, are all found in honey.
  • Minerals include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, and zinc.
  • Honey is a natural sweetener, has antioxidants, and is free of fat and cholesterol.
  • Need more energy? Honey can combat depleted stress hormones.
  • In need of better sleep at night? Honey can produce better sleep and immunity repair.
  • Sluggish metabolism? Honey fixes that too!
  • Healing properties. Have a wound? Put honey on a gauze, and tape it over the wound. It has natural healing and fighting infection properties.

I don’t know if all of these touted health benefits from honey are true or not, but Solomon, in Proverbs 16:24 references the importance of gracious words being like the sweetness of honey – connecting with our heart, our soul, and giving health to our whole body.

Are you in need of some encouraging words spoken just to you today? Do you have a particular need that words of encouragement from some friend will be like the sweetness of honey to your soul? Have you asked God to fill this need? Or have you asked God to point out who needs encouragement from you today? Maybe someone needs you to bless them.

I had the good pleasure of being blessed at church recently from words fitly spoken to me at just the right time! I went up to a friend to be an encouragement and check up on how she was doing, and much to my surprise, her words spoken to me came at just the right providential, from God, moment! I was feeling insecure regarding something, and God blessed me right through my friend’s words that were better than any health benefits from honey and were indeed right out of Proverbs 16:24 and Proverbs 25:11!

Hurtful words sting and cut to our core. A harsh tone in our words can be abrasive. Damaging a child’s self-esteem can last for the rest of his or her life by an impatient or lack of understanding grade school teacher’s words. I remember a particular teacher our son had, in third grade, criticized him for drawing the sun on his picture. She said he was too old to do that. In her estimation only younger children draw suns on their papers and that it was not acceptable for his age. He told me about it when he was in his twenty’s or thirty’s. It hurt him back then as a third grader, and he remembered it into his adult years. Words can build one up or tear them down for life.

Seek out who you can encourage today. Maybe you need to give words of praise and thanks for someone that has been a special “buddy strap” friend to you when you needed it most. Or there may be a friend that needs some one-on-one girl time together with just you. We need to be aware of who the Holy Spirit lays on our heart and mind and not ignore it.

apples-of-gold-words

Paul admonished the Ephesians in Ephesians 4:29, to speak words that benefit others, when he said: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Pray and seek out who you can be a blessing to today or this week, which will be encouraged by your words and your actions. Are you sensing any internal nudges suggesting someone that pops up in your mind? Who do you need to extend grace to instead of criticism? Who can you catch doing something right and complement them in their success? Who around you is going through a trial and tribulation that you have experienced as well? You will have just the right words to give support and to love on them as no one else can. Send a text, an email, a card, or make a phone call, and speak those words that will be sweeter than honey and apples of gold!

My prayer for today: “God, put on my mind who needs an encouraging word from me today. I want to speak words that will benefit someone. Who needs to receive a blessing from my mouth? Proverbs 11:25 states: “Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” I want to be aware and used for your glory in uplifting my husband, my children, a friend, or stranger, in need of encouragement. I don’t have all of the answers. I so often see the glass half empty instead of half full. My lack of patience with others has caused me to be discouraged. You are so forgiving of me when I blow it, and I need to show more mercy and grace in return. Thank You for never giving up on me! I want You to give me gracious words sweeter than honey, and words that are fitly spoken like apples of gold in pictures of silver, as fits the occasion.”

Secure the Perimeter

Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

1-peter-5-verse-8-lion-picture

My husband and I love to watch detective, suspense shows, and movies. Our favorite detective TV shows are or have been: NCIS, Blue Bloods, and 24. Whenever there is a situation of danger and protection is needed involving a police chase, or task force chase of a criminal in pursuit, the head officer commands: “Secure the perimeter” to the team squad. Then once all team responders are in position, the head officer reports back to his commander: “Perimeter secured!”

perimeter-secured-small-picture

I need to prepare for each new day God has given me. I need to be armed for the battle ahead. As I was eating breakfast at a hotel this week, outside, looking at their hedge of flowers that served as a  fence around the property, this brought to mind another visual picture of how I need to “secure the perimeter” by putting on the armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6:12-18. Memorizing and being in God’s Word daily is the ammunition requirement to help me stand firm and be strong in the Lord no matter what hits me. I have to put on my spiritual armor. Then being in prayer causes the armor of God to function. Prayer is what activates the armor.

Last week my husband and I were suddenly woken up at about 3:00 AM. There was an awful high pitched and shrill screeching sound outside in our back yard. It was frightening. We both got up and turned on our back yard light. There were two raccoons, fighting, and rolling on the ground in-between two of our rose bushes. What a site! Steve thought they probably had a possum or rat caught between the two of them and were battling who would be the winner. At last one of the raccoons got up and jumped up our back wall and into the neighbor’s tree. The other raccoon climbed into one of our rose bushes. We then went back to bed. But the picture of this scene stuck out in my mind. It was another visual picture of Ephesians 6: 12-18. I must daily activate my spiritual armor with prayer in being ready to wrestle any relationship struggles, health challenges, chaos in my work day, irritations of life, and my to do list for the day. I need to “secure the perimeter” of my day by spending one on one time with God from reading and meditating on His Word of truth, and spending time in prayer.

Have you asked God what He wants you to know, from what you have read from His word today? Have you asked Him to speak to you and give you direction?

God already has divine appointments designed just for you, and just for me today. God is our: shield, defender, overseer, refuge, almighty Father, light, strength, the great I AM, all knowing, ever present, unchangeable, our all sufficiency, a rewarder of those that seek Him, and so much more!

Tomorrow morning (mornings just work best for me) when I have my devotions, my God, and I time, I will be “securing the perimeter” for my day ahead of me. I will wear the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes with the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. I always end my morning devotions time with God, by praying for what I am writing down in my prayer request journal for that day. Then, I can say: “God, the perimeter is secured!”

Have you secured your perimeter for today?
